How to Install Linux Kernel 5.16.5 on Ubuntu / Linux Mint

A new updated version has been released in the 5.16 series and it is the 5 th release and it makes the branch more stable.

This tutorial will be helpful for beginners to install Linux kernel 5.16.5 on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, Ubuntu 20.10, and LinuxMint 20.3.

How to Install Linux Kernel 5.16.5 in Ubuntu / Linux Mint?

Step 1: Before proceeding to install kernel 5.16 make sure the system is up to date

sudo apt update -y && sudo apt upgrade -y

Step 2: Download the mainline kernel packages from the kernel. ubuntu.com or download using the below commands

wget https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v5.16.5/amd64/linux-headers-5.16.5-051605_5.16.5-051605.202202011731_all.deb

wget https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v5.16.5/amd64/linux-headers-5.16.5-051605-generic_5.16.5-051605.202202011731_amd64.deb

wget https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v5.16.5/amd64/linux-image-unsigned-5.16.5-051605-generic_5.16.5-051605.202202011731_amd64.deb

wget https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v5.16.5/amd64/linux-modules-5.16.5-051605-generic_5.16.5-051605.202202011731_amd64.deb

Step 3: Install the Deb files

sudo dpkg -i *.deb

Step 4: Reboot and Validate

Reboot the system once the installation is completed and verify the newly installed kernel by using the below commands.

uname -r
 install Linux kernel 5.16.5 on Ubuntu
