How to Install Linux Kernel 5.10 in Ubuntu / Linux Mint

Linus Torvalds announced the Linux Kernel 5.10 after seven weeks in development and available for general usage with new features and improvements.

I pretty much always wish that the last week was even calmer than it was, and that’s true here too. There’s a fair amount of fixes in here, including a few last-minute reverts for things that didn’t get fixed, but nothing makes me go “we need another week”. Things look fairly normal.

This tutorial will be helpful for beginners to install kernel 5.10 in Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, Ubuntu 20.10, Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, and LinuxMint 19.3 /20.

How to Install Linux Kernel 5.10 in Ubuntu / LinuxMint?

Step 1: Update the system before proceeding to install kernel 5.10

sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade

Step 2: Download the mainline kernel packages for Kernel 5.10  from the Ubuntu kernel page or use the below commands.

For 64 bit systems

wget https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v5.10/amd64/linux-headers-5.10.0-051000_5.10.0-051000.202012132330_all.deb

wget https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v5.10/amd64/linux-headers-5.10.0-051000-generic_5.10.0-051000.202012132330_amd64.deb

wget https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v5.10/amd64/linux-image-unsigned-5.10.0-051000-generic_5.10.0-051000.202012132330_amd64.deb

wget https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v5.10/amd64/linux-modules-5.10.0-051000-generic_5.10.0-051000.202012132330_amd64.deb

Step 3: Install the Deb files

sudo dpkg -i  *.deb

Step 4:Reboot and Validate

Once the installation succeeded , reboot the system and verify the newly installed kernel by using the below commands.

uname -r
